About

Discover the Legacy of Sussex Trugs at Thomas Smith’s Workshop.

Nestling in the picturesque landscape of Magham Down, Herstmonceux, the Thomas Smith Trug Shop stands as a testament to centuries of craftsmanship and innovation. Established in 1829 by Thomas Smith, the workshop is renowned for the creation of the iconic Sussex Trug gardening basket. This beautifully designed, lightweight basket, crafted primarily from chestnut and willow, quickly became a staple for gardeners, farmers, and floral enthusiasts alike.

The fame of the Sussex Trug increased greatly when Queen Victoria herself noticed them at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851. Impressed by their quality and design, she purchased several Trugs for members of the royal household, a moment that solidified the basket's status as a symbol of elegance and practicality. As a result, Thomas Smith was awarded Her Majesty’s Royal Warrant, a prestigious accolade that speaks to the excellence of his craftsmanship.

At Thomas Smith’s Trug Shop, we proudly uphold the traditional methods of crafting our “Royal Sussex Trugs.” Each basket is made primarily by hand, reflecting a dedication to quality that has been passed down through generations. When you visit, you’re not just purchasing a product; you’re becoming part of a rich heritage. Our workshop is open to the public, allowing guests to wander through our production area, observe the intricate processes, and engage directly with our talented craftsmen and apprentices. This hands-on experience provides insight into the time-honoured techniques that make each Trug a work of art.

In addition to the Royal Sussex Trugs, we also produce the South Down Contemporary Trug. This modern interpretation has been embraced by garden enthusiasts for over 64 years and was sold to the Crown Estate at Windsor for nearly 20 years, further cementing our reputation for quality and innovation. Our commitment to excellence ensures that every Trug, whether traditional or contemporary, is designed to be functional, durable, and aesthetically pleasing.

Our retail shop offers an exclusive selection of Trugs that you won’t find anywhere else. We feature a variety of shapes and sizes, catering to diverse tastes and gardening needs. Whether you’re searching for a classic Trug for your garden chores or a unique piece to display in your home, our collection is sure to impress. But the experience doesn’t end there—our shop also showcases a range of other handcrafted gifts and crafts made by skilled artisans, providing an opportunity to take home a piece of local craftsmanship.

At Thomas Smith’s, we are renown for offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere for all visitors. Our knowledgeable staff is eager to share the story of our Trugs and the craftsmanship behind them. Whether you’re a gardening enthusiast, a lover of artisanal products, or simply curious about our heritage, we invite you to experience the charm and history of our workshop.

In addition, we actively participate in various shows and exhibitions throughout the year. These events allow us to connect with a broader audience and share our passion for Sussex Trugs. For a list of upcoming shows where you can meet us and see our products, please visit here.

We invite you to join us at Thomas Smith’s Trug Shop, where tradition meets innovation, and craftsmanship is celebrated. Experience the legacy of Sussex Trugs and discover why these beautiful baskets have captured the hearts of gardeners and collectors alike world-wide for nearly two centuries.
