About
The Secret Vineyard is located at Lime Cross Nursery, in Herstmonceux.
Sisters Vicky and Helen Tate grew up roaming free around the nursery, riding Shetland ponies, swimming in ponds and hiding in amongst the rare conifers that their father grew.
Today as the 3rd generation in their family to run the nursery, they are embarking upon an exciting new chapter growing vines and making wine.
Helen has a background in wine, having studied BSc Viticulture & Oenology at Plumpton College and Vicky brings a wealth of experience and knowledge with a background in horticulture.
The vineyard sits on a sunny ridge and is protected from the wind by beautiful conifer hedges with archway entrances.
The well drained soil is comprised of sandstone over clay and the vineyard borders an orchard, rich with biodiversity. Including, cider apple trees, peach and pear trees, honeysuckle, wild hops, wild strawberries and wild beehives.
There is a mixture of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay grapes planted, this allows us the flexibility to make both still and sparkling wine.
There are three beautiful accommodation options at the vineyard. The spectacular mirrored ÖÖD House on the lake, a luxury, modular cabin that sleeps 2 people and is fully equipped with heating/ aircon and huge rain shower. The adorable Shepherds Hut, that’s perched overlooking the ancient woodland and the cosy and charming cottage, that sleeps up to 6.
During the summer months, there is a busy schedule of ‘Wine & Wellness’, retreat days, where guests can take part in yoga/ Pilates, wild swimming in the beautiful lake. Followed by a delicious two course lunch, paired with The Secret Vineyard wines, the day finishes with a tour of the vineyard and a fun wine sensory exercise.
