About
Wilderness Wood is 62 acres of sweet-chestnut coppice with stands of beech, scots pine, douglas fir, cedar, giant sequoia, grassy paddocks, a kitchen garden and a Christmas tree field.
Since Roman times, the wood has been coppiced to provide charcoal for the iron industry. Today we coppice and thin the wood to generate timber for firewood, garden structures and buildings. We also continue the ancient tradition of making charcoal, which you can buy for your own BBQ!
The woods are home to two families who look after the woods and the people who visit. We also host volunteers of all ages who work at the wood for up to a year in exchange for board and lodging.
The woods have long been on the map as a place for schools and families to visit. We continue to welcome visitors to enjoy our Alphabet Trail, play structures and refreshment hatch - or to join in with one of our creative, practical or wellbeing workshops throughout the year.
You can also join our active community of members of all ages who participate in the stewardship of the woodland and our seasonal celebrations.
